2011/2012 Volume 6   January 9, 2012

Dear John,

Now is the time of year to share what we love about OCLM! Invite someone to Alfie Kohn's presentation tomorrow night and our Parent Information Night on January 30. Or, remind them to pick up a school choice application and check us out with a campus tour next month.

We have a lot to be proud of, and aren't you glad someone told you about OCLM?

Happy New Year, and welcome home (to OCLM)!

Alfie Kohn Speaks Tuesday: "Too Much Achievement, Too Little Learning"

OCLM and the Conejo Schools Foundation present renowned author, speaker and education leader Alfie Kohn at the Thousand Oaks High School Performing Arts Center on Tuesday night, January 10 from 6:30-8:30pm. He also will be available to sign books before and after the presentation. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Click here to purchase your tickets online.

Alfie Kohn's
ideas on competition and rewards have influenced parents and educators across the country. Most interestingly, his philosophies closely mirror those we hold dear at OCLM--teaching the "whole child" and encouraging personal responsibility and growth at school and home.

Saturday's edition of the Ventura County Star quoted Kohn, OCLM's Dr. Dena Sellers and OCLM parent, John DeRoy. Click here to read the article online.

Habit #3 Training for Parents: Wednesday, January 18

Put First Things First. Work Before Play the Habit Way!
Habit #3

Our teachers, who have been focusing since Habit #1 on personal responsibility, add the "first things first" lingo this month to remind students to stay on task and complete their work before they enjoy free time and play. While both work and play are important, even in the classroom, when our kids learn to choose work first, they also learn to balance their responsibilities with their need for fun.

As parents, we are again challenged this month to look at our priorities. Not other's demands on us, but the priorities that align with our values and personal goals. As we begin to think and act more interdependently, we realize that our lives have just one potential, and that our personal and professional goals are not separate or even at odds. Instead, by fulfilling our personal aspirations, we can discover and fulfill our purpose and potential for work (contributing our talents). Habit #3 may also speak to those of us who are good at putting work first, but forget to add the play!

Join Dr. Sellers on Wednesday, January 18, in the MPR at 8:30am or 6:30pm for the Parent Training on Habit #3 to learn more. We hope to see you there! Refreshments will be served.

You can also visit www.theleaderinme.org anytime for information on the 7 Habits and resources for sharing them with your family.

Winter Crafting with Friends
Winter Craft Fair

Our students brought home beautiful handmade gifts for the holidays from this year's Winter Craft Fair, December 12-13. Thanks to the volunteers who prepped materials ahead of time and provided hands-on help to students at the fair!

Flute-Making Brings the World Home for OCLM Students: A Perfect Encore for Fall Festival

Flutes across the world 1John Zeretzke from Flutes Across the World shared a powerful presentation about his organization and what flutes can mean to kids across the world who are struggling for hope and have very little if anything to call their own. He then taught them how to make and play flutes from bamboo and PVC pipe. All were entertained, and the message hit home for the students as they carefully sanded and decorated a flute for themselves and one for another child.

John will pick up the completed flutes this month and take them with him on a mission trip to Haiti to share with the children there.

School Choice Applications for New OCLM Students
School Choice applications are available beginning February 1 at all schools, the District Office and www.conejo.k12.ca.us, and should be submitted between February 1 and March 1. The applications are only for new students to OCLM. If your child is already attending OCLM, you do not need to re-enroll for next year through school choice.

See the article about our Parent Information Night on January 30, and campus tours coming up, so you can invite someone you know to learn more about our school!
Winter Music Concert Heralds the Holidays
Winter music concert - chorus

Our Band and Chorus performances showcase Conejo's superb musical abilities, and this year's Winter Music Concert on December 14 was no exception.
