Since its inception in 1993, the Open Classroom Leadership Magnet at Conejo Elementary has
provided an alternative program founded on a community-based instructional model. The
program is the only standards-based, K-5 public educational option available in the Conejo
Valley and is designed for families who recognize the value of parent involvement and who
want to participate in their child’s education more fully.
We believe that all children are unique, have an innate desire to learn, and in fact learn best
through experience rather than rote memorization. This is achieved at OCLM through a dynamic
and responsive environment where a low student to adult ratio is maintained by consistent parent
participation in the classroom.

The Open Classroom Leadership Magnet equips young people with the personal leadership and
life skills necessary for success in the 21st century by developing the whole child – intellectually,
academically, emotionally, socially, and ethically – in a nurturing and inspiring learning community.
What makes OCLM Unique?
Focus on personal leadership develops strong communication, conflict resolution and problem
solving skills; promotes the ability to make good choices.
Multi-age classrooms encourage collaboration, foster mentoring between children, enable
teachers to differentiate based on individual student needs.
Small learning environments support hands-on, creative projects and lessons, and facilitate
program-wide events such as Fun Fridays, Fall Festival, and our Stepping Up ceremony.
Parent and family involvement creates a learning environment that supports classroom
instruction and builds relationships among parents, students and teachers.
